It takes the name from Monte Testaccio (or Monte dei cocci), an artificial hill created by Romans using broken amphoras (the latin name is testa) between the 2nd and 3rd century before Christ. Testaccio quarter is located at the foot of Aventino hill, the heart of ancient Rome, very close to Circo Massimo, Terme di Caracalla and Cestia's Pyramid, the funeral monument to Caio Cestio Epulone and the only example of a pyramid in Rome. With a pleasant walk of few minutes you can arrive to the Colosseum and the Fori Imperiali, the most important remains of ancient Rome, witness of the social organisation of Roman people. Another ten minutes along the river Tevere and you can arrive to many famous places such as the Isola Tiberina, the isle of river Tevere, Campo de' Fiori, the most ancient vegetable market in city, and Piazza Navona, the square where it possible to admire the works of Borromini and Bernini, two rival architects during the Baroque period: the church of S. Agnese in Agone and the Fountain of Rivers. The square Piazza Navona is also famous because it used to be flooded on purpose every August in order to organize the naumachias (naval battles). In few minutes you can reach the Piazza Venezia, where you can visit the famous Altare della Patria and its museum.
