Hotel Aureliano is located south of the city center, at approx. 5 km far from St.Peter. Saint Peter: Saint Peter's Basilica dominates Saint Peter's square, which is the Bernini's masterpiece realized in the period 1656-1667. This Basilica is the spiritual centre of the Christendom and the greatest church in the world dominated by the imposing Michelangelo's dome. Vatican Musuems: The Vatican Musuems are the largest musuem complex in the world. The founding of Museums can be traced back to 1506 when Pope Julius II placed a statue of Apollo in the internal courtyard of the Belvedere Palace: the collections are staggenringly diverse and are essentially the legacy of the Popes who were not only fabulously rich but also a great patrons of the Arts. Scores of artifacts were added throughout the centuries. Egyptian, antiquites, classical statues, Etruscan relics and Byzantine paintings all have their placebut two aras that can not be missed are the Raphael Rooms and the Sistin chapel. Sistine Chapel: The chapel take its name fro Pope Sixtus IV della Rovere and was built by Giovannino dè Docli between 1475 ans 1478 under the architectural plans of Baccio Pontelli, as the official private chapel of the popes and conclaves. The wall paintings were executed by Pietro Perugino, Botticelli, Domenico Ghirlandaio, Cosimo Rosselli, Luca Signorelli, Pinturicchio, Piero di Cosimo, Bartolomeo della Gatta and Michelangelo. Trevi Fountain: The Trevi fountain is one if the symbols of Rome: designed in the 1700 as a charming blend of classic and baroque style and recently restored to its original spendour, the fountain has been the ideal set for many movies, first of all "La Dolce Vita" by Fellini. The legend says that a tourist should throw a coin over the shoulder into the fountain to return to visit the Eternal City once more. The Pantheon: Thus name as it was once a temple dedicated to the worship of many divinities, then tomb of many Italian monarchs and of the artist Raphael. |
