Travellers Reviews

We were excited to be staying at the Hotel Fontana and intrigued, not only by the fact that it is a building at least 400 years old, but also that it is located in front of the Trevi Fountain where we were able to enjoy the bustle of the tourists from our nice window view room. Contrary to reading here and there that it would be noisy, it was instead full of the fun and passion we wanted when we first decided to go to Rome! ... Andre' was so courteous and generously assisted us in all our requests. Informative and helpful. The maid service was outstanding. The room was (while a bit small)decorated with antiques that fit the hotel decor. The bathroom was comfortable and there was always plenty of hot water, and because we were there in November, we used the heat a couple of times at night and had absolutely no problems at all. Breakfast was something we looked forward to each morning and was beutifully presented and oh so delicious from the cheeses and rolls to the sweet rolls, the juice...all in all top notch.
With the Hotel Fontana located so centrally we walked our entire week in Rome, to the Colosseum, to the Spanish Steps to Vatican City. Del Corso was right in front of us and gave us our sense of direction and our great shopping as well.
It was so much fun to relax at the fountain and watch probably every tourist there (at least once) throw their wish coins into the fountain and smile as they told the rose sellers and toy sellers 'Noh!'
To be able to count on coming back to such a comfortable hotel each afternoon for resting and each night for sleeping (which we did without any problem - great mattress on the bed as well)was a very important part of spending this much time in Rome. Beautiful Roma!
Highly recommend the HOTEL FONTANA. ... We (unfortunately) had to leave at 4a.m. and our 'wakeup call' was right on time, our shuttle right on time.....our goodbye mixed with not wanting to leave. Again, highly recommend this hotel.
One suggestion: we did have the hotel take care of our laundry mid week, having packed to take advantage of washing some of our clothes to wear a second time. This process took too long and was expensive and we got our things back only in time to pack them to take home. This may have happened because I let my husband handle it with Andre' (both men) and only a woman knows the importance of laundry righ? A small thing, but the hotel might want to realize more expedience with this type of detail. ... See above. ... Fantastic! Fun! Exactly where you should stay to get a feel for Rome before you start your day. Just to stay in a building 400 years old by itself is wonderful. To have it be so comfortable with such nice people attending to your every whim is more wonderful. To find a 'quiet' hotel or an 'Americanized' hotel is almost like staying home. WHEN IN ROME / go Roman!!!!! Afterall, that's why you went there in the first place isn't it?

Very Friendly. Very nice. ... Very comfortable. Helpful. ... One problem was troublesome and frustrating. Upon arrival we made arrangements, recommended by the concierge, for hotel transport to Hotel Club Isola. The price given was $65 Euro. Three days later, upon check-out, a different concierge together with the taxi driver were arguing against us on having to pay $25 to $35 Euro more than what we had been told. The taxi driver was refusing to takes us for the quoted price.
I argued for 20 minutes with them infront of other guests that were cheking in.
The result was that we were finally given the quoted price, but it was unfortunate that we had to leave Rome with this experience. ... I want to express our enjoyment of staying with the Hotel Fontana, and will not let one bad experience with one concierge and one taxi driver ruin our memories. The hotel was beautiful with important history. The location was so nice, that with physical limitations, placed us in the center of many points of interest that were easily accessible. ... We would definitely recommend this hotel, even would like to return in the near future. And, even share a word of kindness for all staff except for one.

No rooms were specified in our booking but of the two rooms booked one had superb views of the Trevi Fountain but the other was inferior. ... A fabulous position. There are a great number of excellent restaurants close by ... Hotel Fontana is perfectly situated, but the rooms are very variable in standard. In the first room we were offered it was impossible to sit on the toilet because the washbasin was too close to it!The hotel is very eccentric and the decor is a little tired. ... Fabulous Position but you will find the hotel very unusual. It will make sightseeing in Rome very easy because you are right at the centre of all the interesting sights. The staff are very helpful and friendly but the hotel may not appear to be the three star hotel you are expecting.DONT be put off by that, the position is everything. y

Spacious is not a word to be used in conjunction with Hotel Fontana. The room was by far the most cramped of our stay in Italy. However, the compensation was the overlook of the Trevi. Nights were noisy due to the crowds but this was all part of the ambience. ... We would happily recommend so long as it was one of the rooms at front overlooking the fountain.

I absolutely loved the Hotel Fontana and thought that your service was very easy to follow and I felt confident using it. ... Centrally located within the city-easy walking distance to most notable sites. ... Amazing view of the Trevi Fountain, a great place to people watch. Small in room size but tons of character. I would stay there again. I could not have picked a better place.

You can't truly experience the beauty of the place until you are there in person. The Hotel Fontana was exactly what we wanted for our stay in Rome. ... I think you have it covered. ... A taste of old Italy. Very romantic. Our room was charming with the antique furniture and beautiful ceiling. Through the open window we could hear the church bell chiming, but we were in the back and did not hear any street noise. We were served a bowl of fresh fruit the minute that we arrived. The view from the fourth floor of the Trevi fountain was the best around. The breakfast was delicious with a variety of meats and cheeses, cereal and pastries. My husband is still talking about how good the espresso was. The Hotel Fontana was within walking distance of everything that we wanted to see (the Colosseo, Pantheon, Vatican, Spanish Steps). The staff was very helpful and courteous. We would definitely stay here again....

We stayed at Hotel Fontana for six nights for our Honeymoon recently, and could not have been more pleased! When we arrived, they agreed to give us Room 105 (published, along with 302 as the best). They not only did this, but also showed us several other rooms, just in case we should be interested in those! (Room 105 was, by far, the best, albeit a bit loud -- it was like having the Trevi Fountain IN the room!!)
... We were very pleased by the fact that (as our Travel Agent basically did very little for us...) the staff made reservations for us at a difficult-to-get-into nearby restaurant, helped us arrange for a day-trip to Pompeii, got us a reservation for the otherwise sold-out Galleria Borghese, etc. We were quite pleased with the maid service, and the Breakfast was not only delicious with a vast selection but also on the fourth floor with an amazing view of the Fountain. (We also enjoyed taking gelato up there at night, after dinner!) The location was so centrally located with easy, easy walking to just about anywhere in the center-city. It wasn't cheap, but then, nothing in Rome is, and you could go much further and do much worse!
... They called us a private car which was nicer than a cab and well-priced. ... We could recommend it over and over!

Staff was wonderful and very accommodating. Instructions were clear and b readfast on the roof was wonderful. ... Our stay at the end of our vacaation was absolutely fantastic. The staff was very helpful in calling taxis and booking operas and calling for restaurant reservations. ... A bit pricey, but definitely a splurge that was a wonderful 'once in a lifetime' experience for us. Breakfasts on the roof were wonderful. ... As we ended our vacation here, it was a wonderful cap to our fun. I recommend this hotel to anyone who wants the supreme Roman Holiday. As we kept our windows open on hot June nights, we heard sounds of the crowds, the trash pick-up and even watched the early morning collection of coins from the fountain. ... Fun, fantastic, and wow! We watched a wedding party come from the little church next to the fountain, as they paraded around the fountain. We spent most of our last night hanging out of the window just enjoying the enthusiasm of the visitors below, and the beauty of the fountain.

A fantastic location, very helpful staff. Only spoiled by a poor quality of air conditioning in the room and hotel generally. We should have mentioned this at the time, but didn't. Other guests said their air con was excellent so we obviously had a poor system. We visited during extremely hot weather and we were just left listless and not at our best. A shame, because most other aspects of the hotel were good. View from the roof terrace is superb. Shower very small for my tall (6'5') husband - we were offered an alternative room but it wasn't much better. ... Fantastic location with helpful staff. Try to get a quiet room at the back of the hotel with air conditioning. No restaurant but plenty within a very short walking distance.

Double room booked, but given twin. Moved soon after speaking to reception and producing booking confirmation ... Superb location, but would recommend a rear room, away from the crowds by the fountain until late at night, even if you don't get the fountain view. Breakfast room excellent, views out to the fountain, and wide range of first class choices available. ... Prompt attention on checkout. Reception helpful in booking taxi to station. Staff happy to store bags in reception corridor after checkout, but a secure room would ease concerns. ... Closeness of the Trevi fountain is both a positive and negative - fantastic location, but noisy 24/7 ... Excellent hotel, and would have no hesitation in recommending - city centre is superb location, and not too expensive.

The hotel staff were very pleasant, helpful and personalble. I was travelling alone and did not speak Italian. They provided directions and assistance whenever required. The breakfasts were delicious and there enven was a fruit basket in the room. ... Very sweet and charming. My room was quite sufficient although rather small only when compared to North American sized rooms.

Excellent location. Room was pleasant but very small. For the high price we would have expected a larger, better room. No mini bar. Considering the busy location in the center of town the room was pleasantly quiet. All in all a nice hotel but overpriced. ... Rooms to the rear (with no view of Fontana di Trevi) are quiet. ... Old and romantic hotel in a prime location. Make sure you get a quiet back room not facing Fontana di Trevi. You are paying for the location and get a relatively small room for your money.

Every one at our arrival was very nice, from the front door to the room . It is a real pleasure for someone who arrives in an unknown foreign countrie . Thank you very much to all the hotel crew . ... Every detail was very envoying, from the decoration of the room to the breakfast room, very pleasant . It was very difficult, every day, to leave this room and go to visit Roma !!!
Just an information about the bathroom, a little small for two people . We were in the room 107 . ... Every thing was perfect, included the proposition to call a taxi to go to the station . ... Yes, you should describe more the breakfast room and the view on the Trevi Fountain we have from it . Both are really amazing !!! ... Really, one of the best hotel I met, with one of the best reception in an unforgettable place of Roma !!!

Our wallet was stolen on the way to the hotel and the staff couldn't have been more helpful. They were great! ... The rooms were very clean and the room somewhat spacious for Europe. However, the bathroom was tiny and the shower would have been a real challege for a larger person. ... I can't remember is this was on the website, but if you do book a room facing the fountain, it's bound to be a noisy night. We were on the side of the hotel and with the windows closed tightly, we could hear the din of the crowd well into the night. ... The location was fabulous, right in front of the Trevi Fountain. You could walk to many places from the hotel and it was easy to call cabs and catch the bus. The hotel was cozy and the staff was very friendly and helpful in all matters. The breakfast room just took the cake, with large picture windows overlooking the beautiful fountain. And the food wasn't bad either!

Tea/coffee was not available after 5.30pm ... If you are staying in the rooms overlooking the trevi fountain at peak times this could be very noisy, however, if you want the view it is fantastic. I do think that adding tea and coffee facilities in the room would be an improvement. ... A lovely hotel which was decorated in keeping with its age. Extremely clean. We had a view overlooking the fountain which was a beautiful view to see when you got up.

I booked a transfer from Ciampino airport to the hotel - which they announced would cost 65 euros. Upon arriving the driver asked us to pay 95 euros because he had to wait at the airport due to the fact that the flight was late. We found this extremely expensive and not correct with regard to the price agreed upon. ... The hotel is perfectly placed, the Trevi Fountain is absolutely stunning viewed from your room, the hotel is clean with a fantastic breakfast room on the top floor where the view is even better - however the rooms are very small and the noise of the fountain and the people visiting the fountain until 3 o'clock in the morning is quite bad.

We were a little diappionted by the room as it had to accomodate 4 people so it was a little cramped and also had a sloping ceiling so we each had an incident per day where we knocked our heads. We were offered another room but this was much to small for our needs. Generally the staff were very helpful and the breakfast room was terrific. The location could not be better. ... No refridgerator ... A well located hotel that is central to many tourist sites. Well suited to couples but not as comfortable for a family of four. Worth staying in just for the experience of having breakfast looking down on the Trevi Fountain.

We are sorry to say we would not return, but not because of the staff, they were very helpful, instead the hotel had no A/C in the front view rooms. We appreciate the view, but it is too hot in the summer to 'just leave the windows open for air.' And at night leaving the windows open for cool air was not sufficiant as the fountian was too noisy to sleep. The rooms are very, very small, especially the bathrooms. The tubs need to be larger in order to shower and the shower head should be hooked to the wall. Or just have shower stalls in every room. Thank you and we hope this information does not sound like complaints but rather helpful to your next guests. Also the elevator was very small only two people and two small bags could barely fit in it. ... We feel the only thing really going for the hotel is the fountain. If it were not for the fountian we would have never stayed in this hotel for the price. ... I would not recommend this hotel to a friend unless the price were cut in half.

As per my comments on tripadvisor.com, we found the staff unhelpful and the accomodation and its facilities were not as e expected from the website. The hotel did not have 'room service' at all; in fact ew spent a few hours looking for an iron to buy in Rome as the hotel said they did not have one (although we found out on our last day that they did). We had freezing cold showers every morning and were given various reasons for this, ie. the hot water was all gone at 11am, the building was old, the plumber was on his way... Our room was very small, basic and noisy and our bathroom was the smallest I have ever been in. The shower curtain did not reach the shower tray and our floor was flooded every day. Each time we brought any of these problems to the staff's attention we were not treated very well. We asked to change room and were told 'maybe tomorrow' but they didn't have a room the next day. We considered and looked into moving to another hotel but our stay was only for 4 days and we wanted to make the most of it. Overall we were very disappointed with the room, service and attitude of the staff. ... Because I complained we were given a discount, but I still felt that the money paid was not worth it and that this does not deserve to be a 3 star hotel. ... You should clearly state that the rooms are small and noisy. I am not sure about other bedrooms but ours (no. 208) had a very small shower room also. Breakfast on the top terrace with a view of the Trevi fountain sounded romantic but was served by a very solemn waitress that wasn't very friendly. ... Probably the worst hotel I have ever stayed in. I do not stay in or expect 5 star service - I have stayed in many 3 star hotels on city breaks - but this hotel is a tourist trap that attracts people only because of its location.
