Hotel Doge offers many good transport options, such as subway, bus, taxi and last but not the least you can even walk to Piazza di Spagna, which is undoubtedly worldwide recognized as one of the most beautiful places all over the world! The central location of the hotel allows easy access to the following landmarks:
Trevi Fountain: It has undoubtedly become famous for the scenes of the Italian film "La dolce Vita" by Federico Fellini. The fountain is one of the most famous in Rome, designed by Bernini and realized by the architect Salvi in 1735. The sculptures which make it up tell the events related to the discovered source from where the water comes which even feeds the fountain itself. It is one of the rare examples of fountain, which lies upon the front of a building; in the middle there is the statue of Ocean, represented on a stage coach with the shape of a shell, trailed by winged horses and surrounded by tritons, which are marine, mythological and real animals. The square in front of it is probably one of the most crowded places full of visitors: it is the custom of Italy that each visitor which throws a coin in the fountain from their back will come back once again in the Eternal City, Rome.
Spanish steps: The square is located on the large flight of steps Trinità dei Monti built in the XVIII century, and on the bottom there is the refined fountain of Barcaccia, realized by Pietro Bernini. On the top of the steps you might see an Egyptian obelisk behind which the church of Trinità dei Monti built up in 1495. From here you might reach, throughout the steps, the terrace with a panoramic view, enjoying one of the most exciting panoramas on the city and a relaxing walk in the public open spaces.
Venice square and the tomb of the Unknown Soldier: The square rises at the beginning of the Capitol and it is dominated by the huge marble monument dedicated to soldiers dead during the war. Just in the middle of the square there is the worldwide altar surmounted by the statue of Rome, whose feet were enriched with the tomb of the Unknown Soldier in 1921 in memory of the Italian soldiers dead during the First World War. The realization of this so huge monument has caused in the last century several controversies and it is also quoted as an example of architectural ruin.
Piazza del Popolo: Created at the beginning of the XIX century by Valadier, it has been still nowadays considering one of best urban works of the city.
The Capitol: For many centuries it was considered the seat of the political power of the city; on the steps of Cordonata, which rises until the wonderful square designed by Michelangelo, Palazzo Senatorio, Palazzo Nuovo and Palazzo dei Conservatori overlook there, where you can find the Capitolini Musuems.
Colosseum: Actually the real name of Colossium is indeed the Anphitheater Flavio, which is undoubtedly the symbol of the city. It was built in 72 A.D. on will of Vespasiano and was finished 8 years later by Tito, his son. At that time Colosseum was like our stadium nowadays, even though the shows were completely different from those of our days: the Roman people, indeed, collected themselves in great numbers to attend the circus games, well-known as "ludi circenses", where the gladiators fought between them. The shows went on up to the V century, when a man, called Telemacus entered the arena and tried to make stop fighting the gladiators. He found the death in his heroic action, but since that day those shows and games were not performed any more. The circular structure, as if it were a ring, has the largest axis of 187 meters and the smaller of 155; the highness of the higher ring exceeds the 50 meters, while the spectators and visitors could arrive at the 80.000 units. |
