Travellers Reviews

Submitted by Greg Smith, Blenheim, New Zealand

We were warmly received and given considerable information about bus services, maps and the likes.
...
We had travelled for 6 weeks through Europe and stayed in a number of 4 and 5 star Hotels. Arena House has outstanding hospitality, is extremely well located and is quiet. Having free internet in the room was a nice bonus.
...
A limosene was arranged for our travel to the airport. The owners and staff at Arena House could not have been friendlier or more helpful. After our poor customer experiences in Venice it was refreshing in Rome to have such a great place to stay and such hospitable hosts. We will certainly recommend Arena House to friends and other people travelling to Rome.
...
Free internet access in the room was a nice bonus.
...
Arena House is in an awesome location. It is located in a quiet back street however just a 5 minute walk to the Open Deck bus tours, the Colloseum and other attractions. There are lots of great bars and restaurants close by. The owners and staff at Arena house bent over backwards to make our stay wonderful. After travelling for 6 weeks through Europe this was probably our favourite place to stay. Its amazing the difference great hosts make.

The Arena House only has a very small brass sign on the corner of the building so watch closely for it. The building is right next to a parking garage.
...
The staff was outstanding!!! I can't say enough about their helpfulness and they were all so friendly.
...
The Arena House's accomodations are not 5 star but the staff, location and extras are 10 star and that makes it a perfect place to stay in Rome. Breakfast was so easy at a coffee bar around the corner and was availabe as early as 6AM. Dozens of places to eat were within a few blocks and we felt totally comfortable walking at all hours. A bus stop is at the end of the street and the metro is only a few blocks away. The hotel was very clean and comfortable. I would highly recommend this hotel to my family and friends.

On arrival, Vincent checked us in. One of the nicest people I would say I have met in my life. Just a genuinely nice, unassuming person. He then produced a map and proceeded to mark every bus stop, train stop on it. Every bus number was marked on it, where to get on, where to get off....unbelievable service!!!. I am sure he has done this with every guest that has ever stayed and yet he did it for us with genuine interest and enthusiasm....
...
I have never in my life stayed any where in the world where the staff were more helpful and courteous. Barbara and Vincent (and the young girl working there one evening) could not possibly have done more to make us feel welcome and our stay more enjouable. When leaving the Arena House to leave for Ireland we walked down to the Metro station, just as we got there, Barbara came running up to us, completely out of breath with my wallet in her hand!!!. From the Metro to Arena House is a good 13-15 minutes walk!!!, how many other Owners would have done the same I wonder?. Barbera then gave both of us a kiss and warned us about pick pockets on the train.
I would have absolutely no hesitation what so ever in recommending to a friend.
...
As smooth and hassle free as could possibly be.

I was sceptical when I read that the rooms were quiet as previous experience of Rome is that 'quiet rooms' don't exits but they were! Had a lovely undisturbed nights sleep which was just what I needed prior to running the marathon.
...
Room was small but I didn't go to Rome to stay in a hotel room! Location was perfect as a base to run the marathon from - very quiet and only 200 yards from the start, which is at the Colosseum, meaning that Arena House is also a perfect base for seeing all the major sights of Rome. Although Arena House does not have eating facilities there are many vrey friendly and reasonably priced bars and restaurants very close by. As soon as entries for next year's marathon open I will be entering again and will also book my accomodation at Arena House again. Hopefully I will also be bringing a few friends!

It's really near the Coliseum and the Palatino, about a block away. And about 15 minutes from the metro station. We walked to everywhere, but if its raining or if you're tired there is a bus stop nearby and the metro is always a good opition. There is a police station down the street and the hotel's area felt very safe. Just beware in crowed metros and train stations.

We were greeted with a warm welcome and orange juice by Vincent! He was sooooo friendly and welcoming. He also spent several minutes using a map to help orient us to the city which turned out to be invaluable. We met Barbara later our first day. There is no substitute when travelling for excellent customer service. The Arena House was unparalleled during our visit to small hotels in Europe.
...
The Arena House was wonderful. It was clean and comfortable. The room was a good size and had a computer with internet access in it. Unlike other places we encountered in Italy, it had an excellent air conditioning system and decent-sized bathroom.
...
Check out was easy. We were informed when we checked in that cash was necessary at check out so we were prepared for this. Vincent called the cab for us and it was there waiting at check out.
...
Arena House is located in a neighborhood just around the corner from the Colosseum which is amazing. There are stores, restaurants and other amenties within a block or two. There is a cafe across the street that had pastries and coffee in the morning and a tabbachi store next to that with all other items we could want. We went to a couple of the restaurants in the neighborhood that were just excellent. During Vincent's orientation he told us about using the local buses to get around and we did this several times with very favorable results. It was very nice to stay in a location off of the tourist track and really feel like we were 'in' Rome. We will be back in Rome next summer for an extended stay and will be based at Arena House. I am looking forward to going back and taking my kids with me.
...
This is a great place. It is quiet and off the beaten path. The location allows you to experience Rome more like a local than a tourist. We never encountered any tourists in this area, except in restaurants. It definitely exceeded our expectations.

We had taken the recommendation from the hotel to take the taxi service to the hotel. Our driver was great and friendly too! Arena House was a friendly, happy, clean, welcoming establishment!
...
The extra's we received were a free breakfast at a Coffee Bar that was a block away from Arena House. The establishments were friendly and helpful - especially since Italian wasn't our first language!
...
The check out was quick and easy. Very organized hotel!
...
Close to all of the big sites, easy access to public transportation if required, clean rooms, air conditioning, full sized bathrooms. The owners were delightful and accomdating and would ask how your day was and offered good tips to get around the city to see other sites and enjoy the culture!

Nice, friendly, could not ask for better.
...
Rooms are small, but that is to be expected in Roma. Clean and relatively spacious bathrooms are key, and Arena house delivers.
...
I booked for double occupancy, but stayed single. I did not have to haggle, discount was openly offer at check-in (very classy).

Small but comfortable, cheap for Roma and very well situated. Very friendly owners/staff. Very quiet as well. I highly recomend it

They were very nice and accomodating -- the young woman even carried my extremely heavy backpack to my room (I protested, believe me! But she said she was strong and wouldn't let me take it).
...
Very quiet room, the windows open up to a nice courtyard, and at night, the street outside is virtually silent. Quietest room of my trip. Also very clean.
...
Checkout was painless -- keep in mind they accept cash only, so make sure you're squared on how much you owe.
...
The hotel is on one floor in a very quiet building, adding to the comfort level in my opinion. Make sure you have a map with an index when you arrive at the Coliseum -- it's not hard to find once you find it the first time, but it can be a little tricky at first.
...
Excellent, friendly owners/staff. Great location, great price, I will definitely stay here my next visit to Rome, and I suggest everyone else do the same. You don't expect much for such a great price, but you get way more than you pay for. I really can't say enough nice things about this hotel. I stayed in 6 hotels in my 10 days in Europe, and this was by far the best.

I was greeted very warmly by Vincent and
Barbara and was given juice upon my arrival.
There was a bit of a snafu, however, because
there was a problem with the toilet in the
room I was supposed to stay in. Arena House
arranged for accommodation in another hotel
and paid for a taxi to bring me there. After
looking at the room I was to stay in, I was
very dissatisfied as I paid for amenities,
such as en-suite, computer (and internet) in
the room, and air conditioning. The new room
had none of these and I was to pay the same
rate. Vincent, at Arena House, was able to do
some re-working and fit me back into the
hotel. I was more ecstatic and appreciative
considering that I had seen my alternative.
He was very apologetic and went above and
beyond to make the rest of my stay pleasant.
...
Vincent and Barbara were the nicest hosts I
could have asked for. Vincent arranged
several tours (Vatican City and Pompeii) for
me and airport transfers. This was quite a
relief as my time in Rome was very short and
I did not have to waste any time searching
for tour companies or information. They even
had touristy books in the lobby that guests
could borrow (and I did)! There was
complimentary juice and chocolates placed in
my mini-refrigerator and more was available
in the lobby. The computer in my room was
being troublesome and when I arrived back
after my day about, a new CPU was already
installed for me! I did not expect the high
level of service that I received and am very
satisfied with how things turned out.
...
I left early in the morning for a tour and
left a post-it note asking Vincent to arrange
for transportation to the airport early the
next morning. I came in late and Vincent was
still awake and able to give me choices of
transportation available at such an early
hour. After those details were worked out, we
had a lovely conversation about Italy and its
culture. I really enjoyed speaking with him
and look forward to my next stay in Rome.
...
This hotel was in a great location, very
close to the Colosseum and within walking
distance to most big sites. The room itself
was small, but the bathroom was spacious and
recently updated (with great water pressure!)
The computer in the room was perfect for me
(and my biggest selling point when I booked),
as I needed to send emails often and at off-
hours. I couldn't have nicer things to say
about the staff, they were magnificent!

It was hard to find. We took a taxi from the Termini station and the driver circled round and round...the small one way streets. The hotel accomodation was a bit of a disappointment. The photos on your website depicted a nice spacious room. In reality the rooms were very small, dark and not very clean. It seemed that the proprietor of Arena House lost interest and did not even bother to make a sign how to open the curtains: he wrote it on the wall. Just a small example but it made the room look even more run down. There was no hotel-lobby and getting a taxi took hours. The breakfast had to be eaten in a bar across the street where they charged 3 euros for a small extra coffee. Next time we will definitely not stay at Arena House. There are better B&B in the same pricerange.
